Dear Israelis, We live a couple of miles from each other, yet I’m aware of the fact that I, along with the 1.8 million Palestinians in Gaza, sound like aliens to you. And no, you are not the one to blame for this. The thick walls and the Erez checkpoint totally isolate us not only from the territory your government is controlling but also from the West Bank, which is, apparently, under Palestinian control. I am writing this letter to tell you that, unlike you, we know exactly what’s happening to you there. To tell you that we know that you live under pressure because of the Palestinian rockets being fired from Gaza toward the cities where you live, especially in the south. I am writing to tell you that I’m sorry you have to run to your shelters every time you hear sirens, I’m sorry...

Dear Ambassador, The South Korean newspaper JoongAng Ilbo has reported that on 3 November, as many as 80 people were publicly executed in your country. If confirmed, this would be profoundly shocking. FIDH, like thousands of civil society organizations worldwide, considers the death penalty as a violation of due process as well as a violation to the right to life, and a cruel, inhumane and degrading form of punishment. The international trend is already towards universal abolition. The silence of DPRK’s authorities on the matter may only lead to impunity and to an arbitrary application of the death penalty. FIDH is additionally concerned by the public character of the reported executions: according to JoongAng Ilbo, a crowd of 10,000 people was gathered at Shinpoong Stadium, in the...

Dear Kim Jong-un, Kim Jong-Un clapping Hey, we wanted to drop you a note about your country’s threat to “…exercise the right to a preëmptive nuclear attack.” You know, we’re all down with countries looking after their own interests and borders. It’s cool that your country does that. Maybe you’ll be upset by us saying this, but we do that sort of thing too. Our methods are a little different, but our nations are alike in that general respect. Ah, respect. That’s pretty important to us both as well. Do you know why we respect you? Because of your choice of Dennis Rodman as your friend and favorite basketball player. You see, if you’re going to pick a favorite player from those Detroit Pistons teams of the 1980’s, you’ve got to avoid Bill Laimbeer. If Laimbeer came to see you...

Dear Secretary-General, On World Toilet Day, 19 November, we the undersigned are writing to you on behalf of the 2.5 billion people who face a daily health crisis. When they wake each day they are unable to do what we take for granted: relieve themselves in a clean, safe toilet. In the developing world, over 1,400 children under the age of five will die today of a diarrhoeal disease simply because they and their families do not have access to clean drinking water, a basic toilet or a safe way to deal with human waste. Nor do they have sufficient water to keep their hands and bodies clean. We know that you share our grave concern on this critical issue. This crisis touches the lives of hundreds of millions of children, from birth to adulthood, if they are lucky enough to make it...

Dear Michelle, Today we write to you as two sisters, two daughters, who, like Malia and Sasha, love their mom and depend on her for guidance, support, and love. Still, we live in a very different world than your daughters. Our family emigrated from Brazil in 1998 and settled in Connecticut. Yes –you’ll be here this Thursday and your husband will be visiting on Sunday. Our mom, Ana Maria, came seeking the American Dream, doing what any mother would do for her children. For as long as we can remember, our mom has been in love with America and what it stands for – its way of life, its opportunity, and its people. As an aerobics instructor and a marathon runner, our mom had been to the United States many times and in 1998 we decided to move here permanently. Our family is...

Hello. I am an ordinary Korean teenager but I am not sending you this letter for an ordinary reason. I wanted to talk about something very serious with you. It is about the new agreement between the Republic of Korea and the United States. Our countries are now both very sensitive about the beef issue. My belief is that free trade must be fair trade, as US ambassadors are on record as saying in the FTA between Peru, which means that both countries should benefit. I admit that Korea has benefitted from trade in the areas of automobile exports, IT products, and cell phones. However, Koreans are very upset with their government. This is clear from the candlelight demonstrations in Korea, yet our government is saying that it is not possible to renegotiate the KORUS FTA...

Dear Mr. President, You will be making a state visit to my birth country Ethiopia early next month. Ethiopia and Korea had long relation and in fact many Ethiopians died during Korean war. I personally worked with North Koreans during the military dictatorship of Mengistu Hailemariam in the 1980s. Ethiopia has been under Meles Zenawi dictatorship for the last two decades. Highly educated Ethiopians are now refugees all over the world including South Korea. You should speak out against dictatorship and for the right of Ethiopians to live in their own country as free people. South Korea attain its current economic position by hard working South Koreans and Ethiopians should do no less. I want to alert you too that Meles Zenawi has been selling/leasing Ethiopian farmlands to...

Dear Leader, I’ve heard that’s how you like to be addressed by the people of North Korea, but since this is the beginning of a letter I guess I should say Dear Dear Leader. My editor sent me this article claiming that while your people are starving you own six luxurious trains fitted with high-tech communications facilities, conference rooms, and even ballrooms. Since you’re reportedly afraid of flying, I can understand you needing a train with all the communication equipment you’d find in, say, Air Force One, but do you really need the ballrooms? Do you like to invite your nuclear scientists to an evening of waltzing? Perhaps this story isn’t true. Not all stories about dictators are, after all. The rumor that Hitler only had one ball is highly debatable, for example, and while...
