Free will in Relationships in Relations with novel 1984

“Marriage shall be entered into only with the free and full consent of the intending spouses.” (Human) This is one of everyone’s basic human rights to only be in a relationship if they consent to it; however, not everyone gets this right. In the novel 1984, the main character Winston falls in love with another character named Julia. Even though the society the novel is taking place in, these characters can’t be together. Winston is already married but he is not in love with his wife and wants to be with Julia. The government has so much control over their society that him having feelings for Julia is a crime that could mean death. In todays world you see that a lot. Even though the penalty isn’t death, these people still find themselves being persecuted for wanting to be with the person they love. Sometimes the penalties could be being disowned by their family or judged by everyone around them. People should have their human rights for free will to love whoever they want.
“Men and women of full age, without any limitation due to race, nationality or religion, have the right to marry and to found a family. They are entitled to equal rights as to marriage, during marriage and at its dissolution.” People have the right to marry who they want but some religions don’t give that right freely. Some of those religions include Hinduism, Islamic, Judaism and Buddhism. What keeps this injustice going in these religions is losing your family in order to gain this right. In an article by “Unchained at last” a girl named Jamie talks about her story with being forced into an arranged marriage. She was pressured into an arranged marriage at age 19 with a man who was very abusive. She eventually told her family about it because she didn’t have money or an education and that she needed their support to get a divorce and they shunned her even though she later got breast cancer. This is unjust and is why our human right should be a right for everyone.
“Without any limitation due to race, nationality or religion.” This part from the quote
above shows that people in different religions and cultures don’t always agree that everyone should be able to choose who they want. In Leviticus 18:22 in New International Version of the Bible it says, “'Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable.’” This verse is referring to same sex marriage. So many other verses in the Bible also talk about this like Genesis 2:24, Romans 1:18-32, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 and 1 Timothy 1:8-10 along with many others. (Bible) The Bible along with all the religions that read and believe in the Bible’s teaching are against same sex marriage. People should be able to choose who they want to be with except for when they are of the same gender and if it involves incest. Incest for some people is fine because it just matters who you love; however, for most people it just isn’t right. Almost all the states think that way too, only 2 states don’t have incest completely illegal. But even with it not all being illegal, these states still have laws for incest more specifically. These states include Ohio, New Jersey and Rhode Island, and some of the laws are about incest are only if it is with a parent, if you are underage or you if you are married, with many others. (Laws) People should have their rights to choose who they want but with that statement comes obvious exceptions.
Everyone should get their human right for free will to choose who they want to be with. People should get their rights especially when being forced to give up that right. With these rights, however does come limitations but love is very powerful and is a right we get to have. Even though everyone should have free will to marry whomever they want to; does having that right make it the right choice?
