Dear Judge Kopf,
On July 9, you posted “Some Things Are More Important Than Others” on your blog, Hercules and the Umpire. You explained why you will write no further entries in your online experiment exploring “the role of judges and particularly the role of federal trial judges.”
By writing Hercules and the Umpire, you helped to make the sometimes impenetrable mind of a federal judge more transparent, more open. To the chagrin of some, you published it online, for all the world to see. So, using the same medium to tell you what I am about to tell you seems right and proper.
Let’s start with embarrassment.
In your farewell, you describe a retreat for employees of the U.S. District Court for the District of Nebraska. When asked how many employees at the retreat felt that your...

Dear Senator Sanders:
I am writing to you today both in your capacity as a present United States Senator, as well as a candidate for the presidency of the United States; nothing hereafter is intended to offend nor to denigrate you, but rather exists solely to express sentiments shared by millions of Americans, including myself. It ought not to be presumed that I am writing on behalf of any organizations I am affiliated with or lead. I write this merely with the perspective of a concerned voter . . .
On July 5th of this year, you appeared on CNN’s State of the Union with Jake Tapper, where you briefly spoke on policy pertaining to American gun violence. Towards the conclusion of your conversation with Mr. Tapper, you stated: “I want to see real serious debate and action on guns.”...

Dear Madam Secretary,
It’s been nearly a quarter of a century since Bill Clinton, then a 45-year-old governor of Arkansas, announced that he would run for the presidency of the United States. At the time, many people had never heard of your husband, although he had four times been elected to the governorship and he delivered a prime-time address nominating Michael Dukakis as the 1988 Democratic presidential candidate in Atlanta. Although the speech was widely panned, your hubby cleverly accepted an invite to appear on Johnny Carson, where he promptly and joyously lampooned himself. The future looked bright: Bill Clinton wasn’t only a moderate southerner on whom the Democrats could rely for political success following three Republican routs in 1980, 1984 and 1988, but his star power was...

Dear Bernie (Can I call you that?),
I’m one of the 2000 people hosting one of your campaign’s “Organizing Kickoff” events at my home on July 29th. I’m doing so because I’m impressed by your uncommon integrity and your clear commitment to a citizen-powered political revolution. Like many other of your supporters, I align with your unwavering stance on issues like unemployment, creating a living wage, getting big money out of politics, and climate change, as well as your voting record on issues like women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, and the Iraq war. As a young-ish adult living with impossible debt, financial insecurity, and resulting feelings of hopelessness, your platform resonates with me. But after your flimsy reaction to the concerns of #BlackLivesMatter protesters at the Netroots Nation...

Dear President Daniels:
We are writing in response to the recent news reports about emails you wrote while governor of Indiana. In those emails, you criticized the historian Howard Zinn and his work, and you sought to find ways to “get rid of” Zinn’s ideas in Indiana schools. However much we disagree with your past statements, we are more troubled by the fact that you continue to express these views today, especially since you are now speaking as the chief representative of Purdue University with the responsibility to embody the best of academic inquiry and exchange.
We appreciate the fact that you have articulated your support for the idea of academic freedom for tenured professors, but such reassurances do not go far enough. In this letter, we’d like to explain what we find so...

To my dear friend Thief:
You know who you are; you stole the rear tire off my bicycle.
I don’t hate you,
I fear for your welfare.
You obviously have been hanging around the wrong crowd. What would possess you to steal from your fellow man? Daddy didn’t give attention? Mommy didn’t care? Deviancy is a learned attribute; I suppose that unlike you, I am blessed to have been raised surrounded by honourable individuals who love me.
I don’t hate you,
I pity you.
You feel you can have your way with the world; whatever pleases you, you shall have. However, you don’t realise that one day your actions will come back and bite you in the crotch. And I am certain, on that day; the gods will be smiling down upon me. What goes around comes around.
I don’t hate you,
I envy you.
We live in a...

Dear Steven,
Let me start out by saying that this space is usually full of fun and light heartedness. I don’t troll the internet looking for Pastors to bash or criticize, but today this is a place for accountability. This is meant in love; the type of love shown in Galatians 6:1-2.
I’ve stewed over this for the last week, ever since the news broke about the million dollar home you’re building in our community. I’ve fought over writing this — going back and forth over whether I should or shouldn’t. I’m sure I’ll receive much scrutiny from this, especially from those who attend your church and are backing your decisions. But, I’ve come to realize that Christ’s name is more important than mine.
As a pastor’s wife, I fully understand the weight your title carries. I fully...

Dear America (It’s really neat to be able to write a real letter to America on Independence weekend—thanks for that),
I can see why you called your open letter to Donald Trump “Thank You, Donald Trump!” The Donald did indeed do the supporters of illegal immigration a big favor by attaching his obnoxious face, words and character to the proposition that the United States has an obligation to control who comes into the country, like every other responsible nation. It is easy to pretend that any assertion by a big, loud-mouthed jerk is wrong, even when it is right, because most people can’t distinguish a message from its messenger. Similarly, a dishonest and dangerous message communicated by an attractive, Hispanic American celebrity and actress is typically accorded more legitimacy than...

Dear Mr. Trump,
Whether one has asked God for forgiveness is not a difficult question. It is black or white, either you have or haven’t. It may require one to give a difficult answer and that is something you provided. Admitting that you haven’t asked God for forgiveness to a group of largely evangelicals was a brave thing to do.
I am not disappointed, angry or even surprised. I appreciate your honesty.
Whether or not that answer disqualifies you to be President, I’ll leave for individual voters to decide. To me there are more important matters than who wins the White House.
I was confronted with this question myself once in basic training, and then again as a college student at Drake University. Both times I concluded I needed God’s forgiveness, on the second occasion I...

Dear Conservatives,
Let's have a quick talk. Seriously guys, what's it gonna take for you all to stop supporting this guy? He has insulted Mexicans. He's insulted "the Blacks". He has insulted women. He has insulted people of faith. He has insulted war veterans. Let me repeat that... HE HAS INSULTED WAR VETERANS!!!! Yet his poll numbers keep rising. I keep expecting the balloon to finally burst, but it hasn't and there's no indication it will. I mean, it's not like Trump hasn't already had his fair share of controversies, most of which were unforced errors. Yet he's come through each one unscathed. Herman Cain he is not.[1]
Do you realize how ridiculous it would be to support a person primarily known as a reality TV star in the first place, let alone supporting a reality TV star...
